Effects of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Therapy on Patients with Poststroke Depression: A Case Study

چکیده
IntroductIon Poststroke depression (PSD) is one of the common complications of cerebrovascular diseases. Drug therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are two commonly used methods in current clinical treatments of PSD. However, either method has its own drawbacks: The former has problems such as the slow onset of action and various side effects, and patients often have a poor response to the latter.[1] Recently, scientists have started using the heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback approach to treating patients with depression and found significant clinical efficacy. HRV biofeedback requires patients to synchronize heart rate (HR) oscillations, and breathe by slow abdominal breathing (about 6 times/min; i.e., at the resonance frequency of 0.1 Hz), and thus maximizes HRV.[2] The objective of this study is to examine the impacts of HRV biofeedback on patients’ emotional improvement and to explore the potential of this approach as an effective, side‐effect‐free supplement for comprehensive recovery.

Psychophysiological studies and MRI neuro-imaging findings provide evidence that heart rate variability (HRV) which is in control of our emotions affects our brain cognitive centers. It has been shown that coherent heart-brain interaction can change the pattern of the afferent cardiac input that is sent to the brain. For this purpose, the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has proposed a kind of biof...

Introduction: Non-REM parasomnias are a relatively common condition in the general human population. Current treatment plans are usually based on small case series and reports. Considering the effects of sleep disorders on different aspects of human life and the failure of pharmacological treatments in this field, the present study was designed to investigate a case of this sleep disorders with...

Decreased vagal activity and increased sympathetic arousal have been proposed as major contributors to the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with depression. It was aim of the present study to assess the feasibility of using heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback to treat moderate to severe depression. This was an open-label study in which 14 patients with different degre...
متن کاملHeart Rate Variability and the Efficacy of Biofeedback in Heroin Users with Depressive Symptoms
OBJECTIVE Low heart rate variability (HRV) has been confirmed in heroin users, but the effects of heart-rate-variability-biofeedback in heroin users remain unknown. This study examined (1) correlations between depression and HRV indices; (2) group differences in HRV indices among a heroin-user group, a group with major depressive disorder but no heroin use, and healthy controls; and (3) the eff...

Purpose: Postural balance deficit is one of the common post-stroke disabilities. Providing visual biofeedback while balance activities are performed is a way to improve postural balance disorders following stroke. But among the research published, there is incoherency about the positive effects of visual biofeedback therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of usin...
